Newcastle United are exepcted to have strong competition if they pursue Bournemouth defender and upcoming free agent Marcos Senesi when his contract expires this summer.
The 28-year-old centre-back has started all but one Premier League game for Bournemouth this season and will be available on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.
Former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, outlined the level of interest likely to surround the Argentina international.
“Yeah, I think (Newcastle) will face competition as well,” Wyness said. “Again, another Argentinian talent that I think could even make the squad again. So I think that there will be competition.”
Wyness added that clubs in Italy and Spain are monitoring the situation and could put on stronger bids and attract more interest from Senesi.
“I think a player of that quality, being able to move, will command a lot of interest,” Wyness said. “And I don’t think, as I say, I’ve mentioned, I know there are Italian clubs that have had a look as well. There’s a lot of Argentinians going to Spain, Italy as well right now.”
Finally ,Wyness acknowledged Newcastle’s need for defensive reinforcement but cautioned that the move would not be straightforward, as is usually the case when a Magpie target leaks.
“I do think that he’ll be sought after, it ain’t going to be that easy,” Wyness said. “But again, if they can keep hold of [Malick] Thiaw, and they can get him up from Bournemouth, then I think they’re starting to put together a proper back four again, which is what they’re going to need to push on next season at Newcastle.”
Newcastle will need to assess their defensive options whether they like it or not, first as part of broader summer overhaul and second as a necessity with three players—Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, and Fabian Schar set to hit free agency—and Tino Livramente sounding more and more like a Man City-bound player.
