The weekend had certainly been a disappointing development for the Braves entering Sunday. However, it had the chance to end on a good note with a win. This was especially true if that win could come along with another good performance from Hurston Waldrep.
That is exactly what the Braves got in their 3-1 win over the Phillies. While Waldrep did not have his best stuff, he continued to show good resourcefulness by limiting the Phillies offense to only one run over 5.2 innings. But even better was
the fact that Drake Baldwin delivered the g0 ahead runs via a home run. So it was the Braves two rookies, against one of the three best teams in the NL, who made the difference when a win was really needed.
Not only were the performances from Waldrep and Baldwin big in terms of Sunday, but they were also significant for both rookies individually. For Waldrep, his 1.01 ERA in August is the lowest ERA mark by a rookie in a single month since 1995 (min. 35 innings). It also could have been the needed performance to secure NL August Pitcher of the Month honors. For Baldwin, it was a stand out moment on a big stage as he tries to keep stride for NL Rookie of the year. In both cases, both Braves rookies are trying to hold off Cubs rookie pitch Cade Horton, who has been amazing of late. Hopefully, Waldrep and Baldwin will earn the honors they deserve and continue to end the season on a good note.
