While many around the league question whether Pittsburgh Steelers seventh-round draft pick Eli Heidenreich will even make the team’s final 53-man roster, one respected NFL analyst believes the rookie could carve out a meaningful role from the start.
Longtime NFL Films producer and analyst Greg Cosell recently shared his thoughts on Heidenreich during an appearance on the Ross Tucker Podcast, expressing optimism about the former Navy standout’s fit within Pittsburgh’s offense.
“I think he’s going to
play because he can do a lot of things for you,” Cosell said. “He’s big, he’s physical, he’s a movable chess piece.”
Cosell believes Heidenreich’s versatility could make him a valuable weapon for head coach Mike McCarthy and the offensive coaching staff as they look to maximize personnel packages in 2026.
“He might play 18 snaps a game, but I think there’s going to be a place for him in the context of this offense,” Cosell added.
The Steelers selected Heidenreich in the seventh round despite questions about how his game would translate to the NFL. However, his unique skill set as a hybrid fullback, tight end, and H-back could give Pittsburgh a dimension that few teams possess.
At Navy, Heidenreich built a reputation as a physical blocker while also contributing as a receiver and ball carrier. That versatility may be exactly what the Steelers are looking for as they continue to reshape their offense around veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
With Rodgers entering his age-42 season, Pittsburgh is expected to rely heavily on timing routes, quick throws, and efficient offensive execution. Players capable of creating mismatches and contributing in multiple roles could become increasingly valuable within that structure.
While Heidenreich faces an uphill battle to secure a roster spot, Cosell’s endorsement carries weight.
Known for his detailed film study and player evaluations, Cosell sees a player capable of filling a niche role immediately rather than spending his rookie season as a developmental project.
Training camp and preseason games will ultimately determine Heidenreich’s fate, but if Cosell’s evaluation proves accurate, the Steelers may have found one of the more intriguing late-round steals of the 2026 NFL Draft.
