Stacking wins. The New York Liberty hosted the Las Vegas Aces for an early matinee game on Sunday at Barclays Center. The Aces treated it as a rest day, which gave the Liberty even more of an advantage in a matchup between long time rivals. New York went wire-to-wire and cruised to a 111-71 victory in front of various franchise icons and luminaries. The team has now won four games in a row and things are starting to move in a positive direction.
The opponent tonight is the most explosive offense in
basketball right now. The Indiana Fever have turned their season around after a rocky start and are looking like title contenders once again. They helped their cause with a tough road win against the Chicago Sky on August 8.

Head to Head: Liberty vs. Fever
The New York Liberty (20-13) face the Indiana Fever (20-12) tonight at 7:30 PM ET on ESPN, with the Liberty looking to avenge a 108-88 loss from July 18. New York won the first meeting 83-75 on June 6, however.
The last time the Liberty saw Indiana, they hit rock bottom as they were blown out and non-competitive against the Fever. Since then, they’ve gone 7-1 and have righted the ship for the most part. The team still has things to get better at, but things are starting to go in the right direction.
The Fever allow the second most shots inside the restricted area per game this season, but hold teams to just 62.8 percent from the field when they get there, sixth best in the league. The Liberty are second in the WNBA in field goal percentage inside the RA at 70 percent, and they’ll look to get to the cup early and often tonight. With the Fever down a center following the season ending injury to Damiris Dantas, they signed Mercedes Russell to a contract.
If things are going well for the Liberty, it will start with Jonquel Jones on the inside. Jones’ ability to break defenders down off the dribble and is fantastic finishing in the painted area. If Jones is able to get Boston into foul trouble, it will force Russell into action a lot sooner than Stephanie White would like. Myisha Hines-Allen is the main backup big, but Jones and the Liberty have had plenty of success when MHA has been on the court in recent seasons.
WNBA Rescinds Caitlin Clark’s Technical Foul
Ah, time for the age-old question in basketball: What’s a technical foul?
In real time, this was a technical foul on Caitlin Clark, which would have been her eighth of the season and would have also triggered an automatic one game suspension. Run the tape…
A couple hours later, the league did what we all knew they would/should do and rescinded that technical. She remains at seven technicals for the season and is active for tonight’s game.
How the Liberty contain Caitlin Clark
… And we’re not talking about the league. Clark leads the WNBA in turnovers at almost five per game and is on track to lead the league in turnovers for the second time in her three year career. For the Liberty, if they can bait Clark into risky passes and turn them into transition opportunities, good things will happen in a hurry.
It’ll take a combination of defenders to keep Clark from going off. Rebecca Allen will likely get the first crack at it, and Chris DeMarco hopes her length and timing will throw Clark off-balance. From there, Pauline Astier, Rebekah Gardner, and if the game is close late, likely Breanna Stewart will get the call as well.
Player to watch: Kelsey Mitchell
16.
That’s the amount of games in a row Kelsey Mitchell has scored at least 20 points in a game. It’s the longest such streak in WNBA, surpassing A’ja Wilson’s record of 15. Mitchell is second in the W in scoring and is someone that can heat up at a moment’s notice. Mitchell torched the Liberty for 33 points in the last meeting as she exploded for 20 points after halftime.
How can the Liberty fix mistakes from the last matchup?
It starts with taking care of the ball. In the last matchup, the Liberty turned it over 17 times and the Fever scored 30 points off of those turnovers. It was the second highest point total for them this season as they punished every Liberty mistake possible. Especially on the road, you have to make the most out of every single possession and ball control will be job one for the Liberty as they look to climb the standings.
Sabrina Ionescu had an eh outing on Sunday against the Fever, but the game was never in doubt so it didn’t wind up mattering. What mattered was her playing a season low 21 minutes. As the schedule tightens up, those days where you can get some extra rest and play low-stress minutes takes on even more importance. In a potential playoff preview such as this, you need your top dawgs as close to full strength as possible.
