Kentucky football continues to reshape its defensive staff by hiring Tony Washington Jr. as the program’s next linebackers coach, according to ESPN reporter Pete Thamel. It’s a move that brings both familiarity
and proven development to Lexington.
Washington previously crossed paths with head coach Will Stein at Oregon, his alma mater, where he served as an assistant position coach from 2021-23 while wearing multiple hats within the Ducks’ defensive staff.
He started his career as a graduate assistant at Nebraska from 2019-20. He moved on to Oregon before spending the 2024 season at UCLA, working with the defensive line and outside linebackers.
This past fall, Washington joined Ohio State as an assistant defensive line coach, where he helped oversee the development of Arvell Reese, an All-American player and a future top-10 NFL Draft pick.
A Los Angeles native, Washington was a productive player at Oregon from 2011-14, totaling 158 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, and 14.5 sacks along the defensive line. That playing background, paired with his recent success developing elite talent, made him an attractive addition for Kentucky’s evolving staff.
If the Wildcats avoid significant roster defections, Washington steps into a linebackers room with upside. Mi’Quise Humphrey-Grace was strong against the run and disruptive as a pass rusher off the edge, while Lorenzo Cowan flashed late in his redshirt freshman season.
Unfortunately, standout edge rusher Steven Soles is planning to enter the transfer portal. Hopefully, the addition of Washington can help convince Soles to stay in Lexington and wreak havoc next year.
As Stein continues to assemble his staff, Washington’s arrival adds youth, energy, and a trusted connection to the program’s new head coach.
