Jonathan Tah summed up Bayern Munich’s frustrating afternoon in Gelsenkirchen rather well — his squad did not take advantage of its opportunities.
The Bayern Munich defender believes the champions were a little unfortunate to leave the Veltins-Arena with only a point after being held to a 0-0 draw by Schalke. Bayern created several promising opportunities, particularly as the match progressed, but could not find a way past Loris Karius, who produced a series of excellent saves.
“I think we were a bit
unlucky today. We had three or four clear chances to score. I thought we could’ve created even more if we had gotten more into the box. The opponent defended with 11 men, which we didn’t expect to be honest. But as the coach said, some teams have a ‘Bayern plan’, where they don’t play their usual style against us. Nevertheless, we’re used to that and can adapt,” Tah said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That last point is particularly important for Bayern Munich fans to understand as many are frustrated with the team’s performance.
Bayern Munich knows that opponents will often change their approach when facing them. Schalke certainly did, abandoning any thoughts of simply trying to go toe-to-toe with the defending champions and instead relying on a compact, aggressive defensive structure.
Now, the onus will be on the Bavarians to find ways to work through such tactics, something that seem to be an annual rite of passage.
