It may not feel like it with how much has happened in the two years since, but it wasn’t all that long ago that Michigan won a national championship, way back when in…2023.
And it’s relevant here because of how the Wolverines did it. Michigan established dominance in the trenches, and it culminated in glory. And as the Wolverines reload for a playoff push under Kyle Whittingham, they’re going to lean on the same approach here.
In that spirit, for today’s installment of our positional breakdown series,
we’re going to take a look at what Michigan’s defensive line looks like in 2026.
The starters: John Henry Daley, Enow Etta, Trey Pierce, Cameron Brandt
In my four years watching Michigan football, I don’t think I’ve been as excited to watch a transfer as I am for Daley this fall. The numbers speak for themselves: 48 tackles, 17.5 tackles for a loss, 11.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one pass breakup last season. The only thing giving me pause is if the Achilles injury hasn’t fully healed up, but if it has, the Wolverines are getting a transformative player.
Lining up on the opposite edge from Daley is Brandt, a veteran who hasn’t had the opportunity to start in his first three years at Michigan, but has looked solid when given opportunities. In 2024, he logged three sacks, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. With a full season as a starter, I expect him to be a very capable complimentary piece.
On the interior, Pierce is the sole returning starter. One of the Wolverines’ best assets on defense last season, he was an honorable mention for All-Big Ten and was named the team’s co-Most Improved Player. He’ll be joined by Etta, who, like Brandt, has seen regular game time without the starts to back it up.
If this is the front four Michigan trots out against Western Michigan, I think it’s an excellent one. In Daley, they’ll boast a contender for one of the best pass rushers in the conference, and he’ll be joined by three more very solid veterans.
The rotation: Jonah Lea’ea, Deyvid Palepale, Dominic Nichols, Carter Meadows
This is perhaps the Wolverines’ deepest position group, so it’s hard to pick and choose who to highlight, but these are some worth keeping note of. Lea’ea is another member of the Utah pack that followed Whittingham to Ann Arbor. Starting 12 games last season and logging 34 tackles and one sack, I’d expect him and Etta to compete heavily to line up alongside Pierce. Palepale has been at Michigan books for two years, seeing action against Maryland and Texas, and while I think he’s a tad below that three-man starting interior line competition, I think he’ll see far more involvement this year.
Nichols is another bit-part player who’s been expected to take a leap forward for a while now. He showed glimpses in 2025, playing in 12 games and logging 19 tackles, 5.5 of which were for a loss, and one sack. Meadows, a true freshman, might be the most exciting player in this group. He’s a five-star recruit who is long-limbed at 6-foot-6, 255 pound. He’s being touted as the Wolverines’ potential next great pass rusher, even if I don’t know how much of him we can expect to see in 2026.
Other names to know
The Wolverines’ pool of resources on the defensive line runs deeper than even an eight-man rotation would suggest. Edge rusher Lugard Edokpayi is a name that’s been generating some buzz this summer. Defensive coordinator Jay Hill has also talked about true freshmen Allister Vallejo, Tariq Boney and Titan Davis as players who will see the field in 2026.
Verdict
Perhaps it’s a tad homer-y…but what doesn’t this room have? Michigan boasts an All-American in Daley, a myriad of experience and multiple capable starters all across the defensive line, in addition to some youth mixed in. Fans consistently have high expectations for the defensive line, but in one offseason, Whittingham and Hill have built a group capable of matching — or perhaps, exceeding — those expectations.
