When the Spurs knocked over a row of tomato cans on their way to a starting record of 8-2, there was a little bit of fan overreaction. The quality of the opponents masked the fact that although the Spurs were very talented and had a lot of potential, they were winning in spite of their mistakes and didn’t always play disciplined basketball. The pair of games against the Warriors were a bit of a wake up call, as their veterans took advantage of every crack in the Spurs armor and lapse in discipline to pull out a pair of close wins in the Frost Bank Arena. The NBA Cup allows teams to experience a playoff-like atmosphere early in the season, and the Warriors showed the Silver and Black that they still have a ways to go to become playoff-ready.
Today, the Spurs have a chance to get back on the right track against the Kings, who aren’t having a good year so far. It’s not a game that they can take lightly, because we’ve already seen what can happen in that case against the Suns earlier this year. Russell Westbrook is always a threat, and 37 year old superstars have been a thorn in the Spurs side lately. Former Spur DeMar DeRozan’s mid-range mastery can be hard to stop, and Damontas Sabonis will be a problem, especially if Victor Wembanyama has to sit this one out. Also, Zach Lavine joined the Kings as part of the Fox trade, and he’s capable of going off at any time.
Look for a good game from Keldon Johnson today, as he didn’t have a great series against the Warriors. De’Aaron Fox seemed to be shaking off some of the rust in the second Warriors’ game, and there’s a good chance that he should be in full effect today against his former team.
Game Prediction:
Russell Westbrook will shoot at least one airball during the game today.
