Newcastle United suffered a second consecutive 4-1 Premier League defeat away from home — sandwiching the Magpies’ win over Hull before the break — as Coventry City punished a succession of defensive errors at the CBS Arena
Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni scored for the hosts, while Sven Botman’s long-range strike briefly gave Matthias Jaissle’s side hope.
Coventry went ahead after only six minutes following a costly Lukas Hornicek mistake.
The goalkeeper spilled Ephron Mason-Clark’s low effort and then brought down Cherif while attempting to recover. Rudoni converted the resulting penalty, sending Hornicek the wrong way and leaving Newcastle chasing the game almost from the get-go.
Newcastle wasn’t completely unsettled and gradually took control of possession, creating enough opportunities to make it a tight game. Harvey Barnes threatened several times, while Matias Fernandez-Pardo wasted a promising break before producing the visitors’ best first-half chance when Nico Gonzalez released him behind the defense, only for Fernandez-Pardo to try to round Carl Rushworth rather than shoot, allowing Bobby Thomas to recover and block his goal-bound effort.
The second half began almost as badly as the first. Milan van Ewijk’s long throw was only partially cleared by Malick Thiaw, and Newcastle was slow to close down Cherif on the edge of the area. The 19-year-old drove a low shot beyond Hornicek to double Coventry’s advantage shortly after the restart.
Jaissle responded before the hour by introducing Joelinton, Amar Dedic and Bazoumana Toure. Newcastle improved, and Botman dragged his team back into contention with 20 minutes remaining, stepping into space outside the area and firing a powerful effort into the top corner. Toure and Yoane Wissa then had chances as Coventry came under increasing pressure.
However, any prospect of a comeback disappeared in the 81st minute. Newcastle lost possession in a dangerous area, and Simms’ deflected effort beat Hornicek to restore Coventry’s two-goal cushion. Mfuni then completed the scoring four minutes from time with another long-range strike, while Toure was forced off late with an ankle problem.
Jaissle apologized for a performance he felt Newcastle should have handled far better.
“We can only apologise to the fans that took the journey,” Jaissle said. “We need to analyse it clearly, especially in the box, at both ends. The desire and hunger to score, to finish the attacks, that was missing.”
The defeat left Newcastle 11th on the table with eight points from six Premier League matches, having won twice, drawn twice and lost twice. More concerningly, Jaissle’s side has now conceded four goals in consecutive away games and boasts a minus-3 goal difference.
Newcastle returns to St James’ Park on Saturday when it hosts Aston Villa.
