- NOT STRIKING OUT: Cubs batters have had a total no more than nine strikeouts in 10 consecutive games, their longest streak of the season without double-digit whiffs, surpassing nine games, April 26-May 5. They had streaks of 11, 12, 15 and 16 games last season; two in 2023, of 10 and 15 games; and one in 2018, of 12, for a total of just seven longer than the current one during the past 10 seasons. - TODAY IN CUBS HISTORY: Greg Maddux makes his first MLB start and it’s a success. He throws a complete game, allows 11 hits and three runs, and adds two hits as a batter as the Cubs crush the Reds 11-3 in Cincinnati. Leon Durham, Ryne Sandberg and Chico Walker all homer for the Cubs. It happened 40 years ago today, Sunday, Sept. 7, 1986.

This is the first of three pitching rematches from
last week’s series at Wrigley Field.
These pitchers matched up last Tuesday. The Cubs scored three runs off Robert Gasser in 4.1 innings, and led the game going into the fifth, but the offense shut down after that. Matthew Boyd shows three runs on his record from this game in 5.1 innings, but two of those runs scored after he left the game, and the bullpen then put this one out of reach.
