Goldberg speared the hell out of referee Charles Robinson during his WWE retirement match against GUNTHER back in July on Saturday Night’s Main Event. Afterwards, Robinson posted a picture of a cracked rib on social media, implying that Goldberg injured him during the match.
When Goldberg later discussed how the match went, he kind of shrugged off Robinson’s broken rib by matter-of-factly stating it’s not the first time he’s broken one of Charles’ ribs, and “it will heal like the other one did.” Goldberg received
a lot of criticism for seeming to not care all that much about really injuring someone in the ring.
Well, it turns out there was no broken rib! Robinson told Chris Van Vliet that he created the initial lie, and then got the okay from Goldberg to run with it. Here is their exchange about the fake injury:
Van Vliet: “Goldberg smoked you with that spear.”
Robinson: “Yeah. I mean, normally he picks you up, lays you down nice and soft. He went right through me.”
Van Vliet: “And he cracked your rib?”
Robinson: “Well, no [laughs].”
Van Vliet: “No?”
Robinson: “No. My girlfriend and I were [thinking] what can I do to put this over, to make Goldberg feel good? And I said, hmm, there’s an image of a broken rib online. So I just posted that.”
Van Vliet: “No!”
Robinson: “Yeah.”
Van Vliet: “People thought Goldberg hurt you!”
Robinson: “Yeah.”
Van Vliet: “People were so mad at him for that.”
Robinson: “Yeah. And I called him to tell him what I was doing. And he goes, that’s a great idea. So, he didn’t mind.”
Van Vliet: “Oh man, people were giving him such grief for that.”
Robinson: “Now, I was sore, seriously, for about 10 days. You know, coughing and stuff. You can’t do anything about a rib anyway, so why go get it checked?”
Van Vliet: “But just to set the record straight here…”
Robinson: “I’m tougher than Goldberg. You’re next!”
Van Vliet: “Goldberg did not break your rib?”
Robinson: “No.”
It sounds like Goldberg did hit him hard with the spear, and then Charles decided to have some fun with it by exaggerating the extent of the damage.
