The Virginia Tech Hokies (5-2, 2-2) are back on the road Saturday, looking to pick up their most impressive win of the season so far. Tech will travel to Clemson (4-2, 2-1) for a Saturday night showdown in Death Valley. While the 2026 Clemson Tigers aren’t the Tigers from the Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence years, they still have a talented roster, specifically on defense, and speed at the offensive skill positions.
Clemson has played two top teams this season: then-No. 11 LSU and then-No. 4 Miami.
The Tigers lost those games by a combined score of 92-23. Those losses led some in Clemson’s fan base to want to run two-time national championship coach—and three-time national coach of the year—Dabo Swinney out of town.
Clemson’s best win came in Week 3: a 28-20 victory over North Carolina.
No matter how you view Clemson in 2026, beating the Tigers would be a big-time win for new Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin.
Here’s a closer look at the Tigers by the numbers.
46
Clemson ranks No. 46 nationally in total defense. Opponents average five yards per play against the Tigers, and the Tigers average 331 yards of total offense per game. The Tigers rank No. 33 in third-down defense, with opponents converting on third downs 33% of the time. Clemson’s pass defense is strong, allowing only five passing touchdowns this season. The Tigers are a top-20 unit in pass defense. Meanwhile, their run defense isn’t as strong, ranking 70th in FBS. Clemson allows 4 yards per rushing attempt and 141.5 rushing yards per game. Can the Hokies’ beat-up offensive line get some push up front against a solid Clemson front? There’s an opportunity here.
110
The Tigers are 110th in the country in total offense. They are 111th in passing offense, averaging 187.5 yards per game and 73rd in rushing offense at 153 yards per game. Part of Clemson’s offensive issues is under center. Christopher Vizzina began the year as the Tigers’ quarterback, but suffered an injury. Even if he only appeared in two games, Vizzina wasn’t exactly lighting it up before his injury. Freshman Tait Reynolds is now Clemson’s starter, and there have been ups and downs. In five games played, including four starts, Reynolds has completed 65% of his passes for 940 yards. However, he has only one touchdown and three interceptions. His total QBR is 30.0.
7-0
Dabo Swinney took over as Clemson’s head coach in 2008, first as the interim coach. In 2009, he was named the permanent head coach. He and the Tigers have dominated the ACC until recently. Swinney has faced Virginia Tech seven times since taking over in 2008, the first in 2011. He’s won all seven meetings, all by double digits. The closest game came in 2024, when the Tigers won 24-14. The game stayed close until the third quarter, when the Tigers pulled away.
11
A big issue for the Tigers this season: turnovers. Clemson has 11 turnovers in six games, including seven interceptions and four fumbles lost. Clemson quarterbacks have thrown seven interceptions and passed for only two touchdowns. Virginia Tech has struggled to force turnovers this season. Could that change on Saturday? The Hokies have only two interceptions, with the second coming last week.
56
Clemson sits at No. 56 in this week’s SP+ rankings from ESPN’s Bill Connelly. The SP+ rankings are a great source of information because they consider multiple factors and aren’t based on writers or coaches.
Here’s how Connelly defines the SP+ rankings:
What is SP+? In a single sentence, it’s a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency that I originally created at Football Outsiders in 2008. SP+ is intended to be predictive and forward-facing. It is not a résumé ranking, so it does not automatically give credit for big wins or particularly brave scheduling — no good predictive system does.
The Tigers are ranked 98th in offensive SP+ and 25th defensively. That’s everything you need to know about the Tigers. Don’t overlook those offensive rankings because the Tigers have multiple talented players, and the Hokies don’t want to be the “get-right” game for Clemson’s offense.
