It seemed inevitable and so it turned out to be. Campus sporting director Markus Weinzierl’s contract at Bayern Munich will not be extended beyond its’ expiry on June 30, 2026, as announced by the campus’s official twitter account:
FC Bayern and Markus Weinzierl have mutually agreed not to extend the contract of the 51-year-old football coach, which expires on June 30. Weinzierl had taken over the position as sporting director at the FC Bayern Campus in August 2024 and will no longer be active in this
role for the new season.
It is fairly notable that Bayern signified Weinzierl as a coach rather than a sporting director, because that is exactly what the 51-year-old is, spending around a decade bouncing between Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs before his experience in that position along with his friendship with Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, led him to take the role of sporting director at Bayern’s youth campus.
It was always an awkward fit and one had to wonder why Weinzierl did not take a coaching job somewhere else instead. He will likely find another coaching role after his time in Munich, while the Bavarians have found a replacement in highly rated now former 1. FC Nürnberg youth director Michael Wiesinger.
Hopefully this M.W. will be a better fit.
