Everton were the hosts at Goodison Park today but they didn’t get where they’re currently at by trying to boil the ocean. Instead the extremely conservative side were comfortable with sitting back and cushioning Chelsea Women’s heavy pressure as the Blues looked extremely keen on beating Everton to a pulp.
Their strategy almost went fully into the drain when Sam Kerr opened the scoring six minutes after kick-off on an Erin Cuthbert assist. However the hosts were able to go back to plan A as extremely
poor positioning from Hannah Hampton gave Yuka Momiki a goal of the year contender.
As we’ve seen this season more often than in previous years this team doesn’t take well having to rally for victories. Everton weren’t really threatening the Blues and looked comfortable with dragging this to a draw at the final whistle, and Chelsea weren’t making life for themselves any easier.
Second half started with Everton almost finding their second score, which only didn’t happen because Mayumi Pacheco’s aim was bafflingly off while right in front of our goal. Then Kerr showed how you do these things properly with her second goal of the day.
Since a win was far from certain with a one-goal lead, we kept chasing after a third. That arrived somewhat quickly with Ellie Carpenter drifting inside from the right flank to play goalscorer on Alyssa Thompson’s assist.
Erin Cuthbert, who has often taken the captain armband in Millie Bright’s absence, got herself in the scoresheet. Four goals were enough to secure a vital three points in our chase for a Champions League berth.
Carefree!
- Midfield three.
- Lauren James is amazing.
- Sam Kerr potentially denied a hat-trick at minute 52 because the Women’s Super League can’t afford goal-line technology.
- Next up: Leicester away in the Women’s Super League.
- KTBFFH!
