The Los Angeles Rams could put Matthew Stafford’s arm at the center of their offensive game plan against the Washington Commanders in Week 9. The Rams are currently favored (-4.5) over the Commandersaccording to FanDuel. Washington’s pass defense is allowing 243 yards per game (27th in NFL), making it a strong probability that LA will dial up the passing game. Despite reports that Stafford is dealing with elbow soreness, Los Angeles should lean into its passing attack and allow its veteran quarterback
to dictate the matchup. The Rams’ success could ultimately depend on how aggressively they’re willing to let Stafford air it out.
RAMS-COMMANDERS PREDICTIONS:
1. Stafford throws for 275 yards & 3 touchdowns
Just when people begin to speculate that Matthew Stafford is not the same player or that he is hurt, the veteran quarterback proceeds to have a monster game. I believe he will do just that against a weak Commanders passing defense. The weather for the game is suppose to be near 60 degrees with minimal wind; making it a perfect opportunity for Stafford to get the passing offense on track. Look for Tutu Atwell and Tyler Higbee to play a complimentary role behind Puka Nacua.
2. CJ Daniels takes over WR3 role, catches touchdown
The Rams haven’t used their 3rd wide receiver in the passing game since 2018 when the team had Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, and Brandin Cooks. Now, the majority of the targets are to Puka Nacua and then maybe a second and third option see 4-5 targets. But with the Rams missing Davante Adams, they have desperately needed production on the perimeter. CJ Daniels number is likely to be called with Konata Mumpfield and Jordan Whittington producing next to nothing in the passing game.
3. Rams convert 50% of third downs
Last week against the Chargers, the offense only converted 3 of 11 third downs. Not exactly a strong showing for a team in the top 10 in third down conversion rate. This week, I think the offense goes 7 of 13.
4. Aaron Donald (this time) recovers fumble
Aaron Donald missed a golden opportunity for a fumble recovery and potential touchdown when Wesley Bailey notched a strip sack of Justin Herbert last week. This time, Myles Garrett gets the strip sack and Aaron Donald gets the recovery; allowing the two teammates to celebrate on the field together as opposed to Garrett laughing from the sidelines.
5. Tutu Atwell returns punt, averages 18.0+ yards per return
The Rams released Alex Bachman this week in order to shake up their special teams yet again. With the goal of finding explosiveness in the special teams phase, the Rams opt to give Tutu Atwell the first chance at returning punts. He breaks off a huge return for 39 yards; flipping the field for the Rams offense. For the day, Atwell averages 18.8 yards/return.
