UFC hype killer Sean Sharaf made a good chunk of money on Saturday night at UFC 331, but it won’t be enough to erase all the debts he’s incurred on his road to making it in the UFC.
Sharaf iced hot prospect Gable Steveson in just 12 seconds, knocking the Olympic gold medalist wrestler out with a massive left hook that put Steveson out cold on the canvas (watch the highlights here). The win was his first in the UFC, pushing him up to 1-2 with the promotion since joining in October 2024.
Making it to
the UFC and through the first lean years with the promotion is a difficult financial proposition. Starting fighters are often making $10k/$10k or $12k/$12k. According to CSAC disclosure forms, Sharaf made $30k/$30k to fight Steveson on the main card of UFC 331, which was his first fight of 2026. A post from “The Smoke” leading up to the card shared his Experian financial tools dashboard: according to that, he’s over $688,000 in debt.
In an Instagram story following the win, Sean Strickland shared a picture of Sharaf’s sleeping situation: a thin mat on the floor in an empty room. Strickland told him to get a cheap Amazon mattress for three hundred bucks. Sharaf replied he’d just get an inflatable air mattress.
“Time to get a nicer mattress after that $100k bonus you’re about to get,” Strickland wrote. In the end, Sharaf was overlooked for an official performance bonus, but UFC CEO Dana White threw him a bone.
“They did a MobLand bonus tonight for $50,000,” White said at the UFC 331 post-fight press conference. “That’s going to Sean, and I’m going to match for another $50,000, so he gets $100,000. Somebody said he’s $600,000 in debt. We are knocking out $100,000 off the $600,000. There you go. Congrats to him.”
Sharaf touched on his financial situation during his own portion of the post-fight presser.
“You got to believe in yourself, and it’s a grind, man,” he said. “On the regional scene, you’re not getting paid. You’re constantly getting beat up. You got to work a full-time job and it’s a grind, man. And even once you get to the UFC, like bro, I’m about to file bankruptcy this year. I’m so far in debt, it’s not even funny.”
“I just want to help my mom retire. And yeah, on the regional scene, guys, they all struggle. But at the end of the day, if you want this bad enough, you’re going to persevere and you’re going to keep going and it’ll pay off one day.”
It’s about 1/6th paid off now. Here’s hoping Sharaf manages to keep this momentum going and put even more of a dent in that debt.
