The 2026 edition of SheBelieves Cup kicked off last night and just one match day in, we can already see what type of tournament this will be. The United States Women’s National Team opened up this year’s tournament campaign with a hard-fought, physical win over Argentina. Not only is getting back to winning it all the goal for the USWNT, but this year it’s also about preparing for the upcoming 2027 FIFA World Cup and the qualifiers set for the end of this year. Which is probably why its a good thing
they are sharpening their skills against some very tough CONMEBOL competition in this years SheBelieves.
Concacaf vs CONMEBOL
The one big thing we learned from match day one is that this is going to be a very physical tournament. To those of us familiar with these two confederations, that comes as no surprise. Riding a nine match unbeaten run, Argentina came in looking to throw of the United States early with some very tough play. Crunchy tackles, body checks, a cauldron full of dark arts brewing on the sideline, it was a typical matchup that we’ve come to expect when these two groups of countries clash. There were times the line between physical play and dirty actions were severely blurred, like when Jaedyn Shaw was dragged down by her hair, or near the end of the match when Trinity Rodman had to come off after getting kneed right in her spine. It was pretty clear Argentina thought they could just bully their way to a result and to be fair, it nearly worked. USWNT struggled to get their attack going, possessing the ball a ton, but failing to fully take advantage of that possession, finishing the match with just six shots. What Argentina didn’t know is that Concacaf isn’t no walk in the park, and USWNT are a team full of physical players that don’t mind dishing it out as much as they take. It was a very gritty match and the win showed everyone if the plan is to try and bully this team to throw them off their game, it isn’t going to end well for you.
Locking In
The theme coming into this tournament from both Head Coach Emma Hayes and the players alike, was that this version of the tournament means a lot more. It’s less about winning it all for the eighth time in eleven editions, and far more about setting the tone for the real important matches coming up at the end of the year. Qualifications for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup are right around the corner, and this was the first chance we got to see a roster full of players with real hopes of being on that final roster going to Brazil. Which is what makes this win so much sweeter. Sure, this wasn’t as dominant a performance as we are all used to, but as we mentioned earlier, it was clear Argentina was trying to go the aggressive route and USWNT answered not just with a pair of goals, but by showing they don’t mind it getting rugged and tough. Iron will sharpen iron this tournament and whether they win it all or not, the next couple of matches will be incredibly beneficial for the longterm goal of having this squad ready for the real challenges to come.
The future is now
It feels like for the better part of the last few years all we’ve talked about is the transition of the USWNT roster. We’ve seen the rise of the triple espresso, the arrival of Lily Yohannes, the breakout of Jaedyn Shaw, and up until now the question was always ‘when will the United States finally lean fully into the young pool of talent that has grown within this system the last few years’? Well, the answer is now. Last night we saw one of the youngest squads we have seen in a very long time. Five of the starting XI last night were either 21-years-old or younger while only one player, Lindsey Heaps, was over the age of 28. Perhaps that youth is why Argentina thought they could somehow gain a mental edge with how they played at times throughout the match, but the kids showed they don’t just have talent, they are mentally dangerous as while, not letting the gritty nature of the night throw them off from their goals. In full fairness, there are still some equally young, veteran players out there that have yet to return and expect to be on the plane to Brazil in 2027, like Sophia Wilson, Mallory Swanson and Catarina Macario. That said, the young future of the United States Women’s National Team, has arrived. It will be really intriguing to see how they continue to look not just for the remainder of SheBelieves, but should this be the roster we see consistently leading into qualifiers, it will be interesting to see who makes a solid case for World Cup call-ups because after last night, there are a handful of players you could point to and feel comfortable about their chances of making the prestigious roster.
This might have only been the first match of SheBelieves, but it provided us with so much insight. It’s the first real bite of competition we’ve seen in 2026, for as fun as friendlies are, they don’t come with this type of intensity all the time. The team knows how important this tournament is not just for the pride of winning it all, but for the preparation it will provide for the daunting road ahead.
