With only one season of producing 50 sacks or more, it would be notable if the Falcons’ defense were able to reach that total. For all the progress that has been made, they’ve still endured a grim season filled with disappointment. The impressive efforts combined with shrewd game
plans led to massive wins in a hostile environment against Minnesota and a major showcase matchup against Buffalo. How they generated pressure, both schematically and individually, made viewers realize that this isn’t the standard Falcons’ overmatched defense where quarterbacks can remain cozy in the pocket.
Jeff Ulbrich’s unit currently ranks third in the NFL with 43 sacks. That puts them on track to reach 50 with four more games to go. It will be challenging with Baker Mayfield’s uncanny ability to escape pressure, Matthew Stafford’s command in the pocket, and Tyler Shough exceeding expectations. Nevertheless, this group has risen to the occasion in several matchups this season. Seven sacks in four games is certainly doable.
James Pearce Jr. has produced at least one sack in the last five games. Brandon Dorlus is expected to return from injury. Leonard Floyd has been playing at a high level over the past few games. There is always a threat with Kaden Elliss and Arnold Ebiketie bursting into the pocket off a twist or inside move. While Jalon Walker is currently hurt, he shouldn’t miss time going forward.
