The Rangers World Series win in 2023 was a fluke.
Walk with me.
I don’t mean fluke in that it was 100% luck, because literally every championship win in any sport has an aspect of luck to it.
I don’t mean fluke in that it wasn’t earned, that was a damn good team with damn good coaches, they earned every part of that win. No losses on the road that entire post season run?! Incredible.
It was a fluke in that it was the one and only season that Rangers ownership decided to give a damn. They decided to throw
money in to build the strongest team they could. They decided “Hey since we have Bochy and he’s managed three previous world championship winning teams, what if we give him a fourth in his first season with the Rangers?”
And then they got their ring and went “Ok that should appease everyone for the next 60+ seasons.”
They seemed to have decided that because fans were so elated to finally get that ring, we would be fine to never get close any time soon. How the 2023 team didn’t get back the playoffs makes no sense. 2024 and 2025 had most of the same pieces and the same manager but they, and Chris Young, didn’t have the backing of ownership to build on that and fill in the gaps lost from injuries and free agency.
You would think the goal of ownership is to build a dynasty.
The goal of the Rangers ownership is to apparently never win again.
They seem to have heard “build it and they will come” and missed the fine print of “‘maintenance required.” The Rangers got a brand spanking new stadium with a roof and air conditioning, and the only winning season they’ve had is 2023.
It’s their only winning season in the last decade.
And the only true consistency they’ve had in that decade plus? Ownership.
In the last decade there has been four different managers. Multiple pitching and hitting coaches. Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Nathan Eovaldi, Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom, Bruce Bochy, Mike Maddox, Skip Schumaker.
Six gold glove winners, four silver sluggers, 2025 team gold glove for .9911 fielding percentage, and AL 2025 comeback player of the year. All in the last 10 seasons.
Could it have been better? Sure! But my point is, we didn’t have bums. We didn’t have nobodies on the field. We weren’t rebuilding. It feels as though hands are being tied and prevented from improving the team.
They’ve made changes to the lineup, the defense, the coaching staff, and the management. How many people need to be blamed before the really problem is addressed?
Going into this season Rangers still had 10 players from the 2023 season (until they traded Josh Smith. But also can we count Travis Jankowski still please?) none of them regressed that much outside of injuries.
The ownership spent money for three seconds and didn’t maintain the growth.
This franchise could be so much better if we had ownership that believed in this team as much as deGrom does… or maybe now that the season was lost, did?
