Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer sounds just a little tired of the constant speculation over his future. At 39 and going on 40 in March, the timeless veteran is nearer the end of his career than the beginning
— maybe — and his contract status with the club is on a year-to-year basis.
Only this year, it does sound different.
“I’m not setting myself any targets. As I said, I live in the here and now and I’m not thinking too much about it,” Neuer reiterated in a December interview with Bundesliga.com, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I want to finish off this part of the season positively and then we’ll go again in January and try to have a good start.
“We’ll play up until March until the first international break and then we’ll take it from there. I can’t really answer that at the moment because I don’t really know that myself. A lot of things have to be right. My body has to be at a certain level that I am happy with and where I can deliver performances. Of course, the club plays a role in this decision too, so we will have to sit together and make a decision at some point.”
Coincidentally, that March international break is just about last call time for players looking to break in, or re-join the German men’s national team ahead of next summer’s World Cup. Could a certain Man Wall be among them — and like Toni Kroos at the last EUROs, enjoy one last tournament before hanging ‘em up for good?
