When Harry Kane left England for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, there was plenty of speculation that he would eventually return to the Premier League to chase Alan Shearer’s all-time scoring record. Based on Shearer’s latest comments, though, it does not sound like the Newcastle United legend is rooting for that scenario anytime soon.
Shearer made it clear that he is happy to see Kane continue his career in Bavaria.
“It sounds as though Harry Kane is going to be staying at Bayern Munich for another
season or two and I’m quite pleased by that! They won the league again and were close in the Champions League, so it’s not a surprise he wants to stay, he might feel he has unfinished business with how close they came in the Champions League,” Shearer told Betfair. “But whatever his reasoning is, I’m hoping he stays over there for obvious reasons. Is it a shame that one of England’s greatest strikers might not see out his career in England? No, I think it’s great!”
The “obvious reasons” are not difficult to figure out. Kane sits within striking distance of Shearer’s Premier League record of 260 goals, and another season or two in Germany would make it significantly more difficult for the Bayern Munich striker to catch him.
Of course, Kane has never publicly stated that breaking the record is his top priority. Since arriving at Bayern Munich, he has consistently talked about winning trophies, competing for the UEFA Champions League, and testing himself outside of England. After finally lifting the Bundesliga title, the next logical objective is helping Bayern Munich reclaim the Champions League crown after last season’s heartbreaking exit.
Whether Kane ever returns to England remains an open question. For now, however, it appears both he and Bayern Munich are committed to chasing more silverware together, even if it means Shearer gets to keep his Premier League scoring record a little while longer.
