Ahead of their first ever home Men’s World Cup, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch provided an update on Alphonso Davies and his likelihood of taking part. Reports indicated that Bayern Munich and Canada Soccer were in conversation to decide the path forward for the player, who has been beset by injuries since an ACL tear sustained on international duty the year before.
Marsch confirmed that Davies will play at the World Cup, but he may miss Canada’s opening game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Asked if Alphonso Davies will play at the World Cup, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch said: “Yes,” but added: “I don’t think he’ll be ready quite on June 12, but we’ll see.”
“We spoke with Bayern and thought that the best thing for Alphonso was to continue his initial recovery treatment until May 28. Then we’re giving him a few days to get away, and (on May 31) we’ll pick up his rehab from there and try to put him in a position to physically succeed and be part of our team. We’re all working together to try to help that situation improve, and most importantly for Alphonso, I think he has trust in both sides of the pond right now. Obviously, he has frustration, but we all want to set him up to succeed.
The last thing I’ll say about Alphonso is that he’s really excited to get back with the team. He’s really excited to push in this World Cup and get himself ready. I’m even the one who said to him: ‘Take a few days after your treatment and before you come with us to clear your head, to make sure that emotionally and psychologically you are recharged, because when we get you here, it’s going to be full steam ahead.’ So I think that the plan we’ve created will be a good one for him and for us.”
Davies is still a young player, but these recurrent injuries threaten to cut a promising career short. One of the best left-backs in the world when fit, Canada Soccer must handle his latest injury carefully lest they jeopardize his future.
