On Monday morning, it was announced that the Dolphins were cutting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with a post-June 1st designation at the start of the league year.
On Monday afternoon, it was announced that the Atlanta Falcons are expected to sign Tagovailoa — as they were strongly pursuing the former number five overall pick from the 2020 NFL Draft in free agency.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Tagovailoa will sign a one-year deal with Atlanta once the official start of free agency arrives on Wednesday.
The move will give the Falcons two left-handed quarterbacks — as the team also employs third-year signal caller, Michael Penix, who they drafted with the eight overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The two players will battle it out to see who begins the season as the team’s starter — with Penix making his way back from a November 2025 ACL tear.
Following Schefter’s report, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network chimed in that, as expected, Tagovailoa is signing a veteran-minimum contract with Atlanta, while Miami will still pay the lion’s share of the quarterback’s salary for 2026.
Of course, the Dolphins will also have a new-look quarterback room after agreeing to a deal with former Green Bay Packers backup quarterback, Malik Willis, on Monday as well.
