The Detroit Tigers opened up their six-game homestand on Labor Day with a narrow 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Troy Melton had some hiccups, but the bullpen held strong this time, while the offense had just enough juice to outlast the visitors.
Taking the mound in Game 2 for the Olde English D is right-hander Drew Anderson, who will be making his ninth start of the season. The 32-year-old has been solid since his permanent promotion to the rotation, posting a tidy 2.57 ERA but a less-impressive
4.92 FIP in those six games stretching across 28 innings of work.
Anderson’s last start also came against Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he spun 5 2/3 frames of two-run (one earned) ball on three hits and two walks while striking out five for a no-decision in a game that Detroit ultimately won, 11-6, in 12 innings.
A familiar face will toe the rubber for the Twins on Tuesday night — fellow righty Dean Kremer, who will be making his third start against the Motor City Kitties this season and second as a member of Minnesota’s staff. The 30-year-old was on the hill in that same 12-inning battle as Anderson, coughing up four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five plus a wild pitch over four frames, also failing to figure in the final decision.
If the Tigers prevail, they will clinch their first series win since taking two of three from the Cleveland Guardians from Aug. 11-13. Here is how the two hurlers match up for their second face-off in a week.
