It’s been a while since I wrote a report update kind of piece, but this one is necessary, unfortunately.
There were multiple reports on Wednesday morning that Miami Hurricanes WR Malachi Toney sustained an ankle/lower leg injury during today’s practice.
Initial reports indicated the injury was minor and Toney’s recovery would be minimal and his availability for this week’s game at Notre Dame was certain. However, further reports after Toney was further evaluated by medical professionals had a less
positive outlook.
The extent of Toney’s injury is not known. Since this week’s game is a non-conference game, there is no availability report that would give further insight. And, with Miami and Notre Dame both being private schools, they do not have to disclose such information publicly, should they choose not to.
A leading Heisman Trophy candidate and the explosive element of Miami’s offense, Toney is among the best players not only at his position, but in the country. He’s already broken multiple records in his career at Miami, and very well may leave as the most productive player in program history. So, missing someone of that caliber would be a big loss for the Canes for any game, but especially one against a team of Notre Dame’s quality.
This is a developing situation, and further updates will come when more is known. For now, the pretty well worked consensus is that Toney was injured today in practice and it was to his ankle/lower leg. Beyond that, we’ll have to wait and see.
More when it’s available.
