Commanders 2025 position review | Tight ends
What [is] the future of the tight end room? Ertz tore his ACL against the Vikings, and with the injury happening near the end of the season, the likelihood of him
being ready in September is low. Ertz is also about to be a free agent, leaving a hole at the top of the position for someone to fill. The Commanders aren’t ruling out either Bates, Yankoff or Sinnott stepping up to fill that role, but it’s also possible that Washington could address the position in free agency or the draft. The Commanders had the oldest roster in the NFL last season, and while Ertz offers a rare skill set, his potential absence could give them a chance to reset with a younger option.
What’s next for Sinnott? A 2024 second-round pick, Sinnott was the second tight end taken in his class with the expectation that he could develop into an all-around player. He could still be that player at some point, although his path has been a bit longer than anticipated by fans. He had just five receptions as a rookie and 11 in 2025, although the coaching staff believes they have seen steady progress from him in other areas of his skill set. Assuming Ertz is not ready for the start of the season or does not re-sign with Washington, it would provide Sinnott with more opportunities to get more reps and continue his development.

The Commanders have a tough decision to make in the 2026 NFL Draft, and Dante Moore going back to college threw a wrench in their plans.
There were supposed to be two top quarterback prospects for the 2026 NFL Draft with Fernando Mendoza and Dante Moore, but that changed on Wednesday. Moore was a lock to be a top-5 pick with so many quarterback-needy teams picking ahead of the Commanders, but he decided to go back to college for one more year.
The Commanders obviously have a quarterback in Jayden Daniels, so how does this impact them? It changes two situations for the Commanders, and how the board will fall to them.
Mendoza is now the only quarterback projected to go in the top-10, with Trinidad Chambliss and Ty Simpson as QB2 and QB3, but giant wild cards. For the trade-back crowd, the Commanders’ chances of doing so are as low as possible now, with no quarterbacks worth trading up for. Teams like the Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the New York Jets, who have picks No. 2 and No. 16, could just wait to take a quarterback where they are.
[T]eams ahead of the Commanders will now have to take another player who is not a quarterback, which means one more player will be off the board than we weren’t expecting at all.
Right now, the top-eight picks of the 2026 NFL Draft are Mendoza, Arvell Reese, Caleb Downs, Jeremiyah Love, Rueben Bain Jr, David Bailey, Jordyn Tyson, and Carnell Tate. That means the Commanders will have one less option to pick from, which could result in them missing out.

Ben Johnson Praises David Blough Hire
“He’s really smart, has a natural way of connecting with everybody, coaches and players alike,” Johnson said. They found tremendous value in him as well. I think he’ll do an outstanding job in that role. I think he’s really smart. Having played quarterback. He’s got that inward feel of how to help elevate that position, you know, and I think he’ll be able to do that in a play-calling role going forward. So I think he’ll be, he’ll be one of those young guys that gets a head job before you know it.”
Beyond just the high praise, Johnson’s belief went beyond just words when he attempted to hire him last offseason.
The Commanders seem to have shared Johnson’s sentiment, given the speed at which Blough has risen through the coaching ranks.

Commanders could have their chance to acquire Romeo Doubs in free agency
It’ll be interesting to see what unfolds, but Peters should be making contingency plans. And it sure sounds like one possible free-agent target just said goodbye to his current employers on social media.
Romeo Doubs’ rookie deal with the Green Bay Packers is up. He ended on a high note with a sensational display in their wild-card round playoff defeat to the Chicago Bears. Even so, it wasn’t hard to read between the lines of his latest Instagram post, which seemed like a montage of his time with the NFC North club before taking his chances elsewhere.
Doubs is young and ascending. He’s coming off a campaign where he achieved career highs across the board. And even though he has never come close to reaching 1,000 receiving yards, he’s never been a legitimate No. 1 or No. 2 option for long, either.
According to Spotrac, Doubs is expected to command an annual salary of $12 million on a four-year, $48 million deal. Washington has more than enough cash available to make him a decent offer, and getting the chance to continue his career catching passes from Daniels is another strong selling point.
Doubs is a physically imposing receiver who makes life difficult at all three levels of the field. Adding him to the group may give Treylon Burks a chance to fill the void left by Samuel. He was compared to the player more than any other during the pre-draft process, and the ex-Tennessee Titan flashed enough when called upon over the second half of 2025 to warrant further investigation.

Washington Commanders Owner Pays $28 Million for D.C.’s Most Expensive Home
Billionaire investor Joshua Harris plans to return the historic Halcyon House back into a single-family home
THE DEAL: Billionaire investor Joshua Harris, the owner of the Washington Commanders NFL team, and his wife, Marjorie Harris, have paid a $28 million for a storied Washington, D.C., landmark with plans to return it to its original use as a single-family home, a spokesman for Harris confirmed. The sale is a record for the city.
THE HISTORY: The Georgetown home was built for Benjamin Stoddert, the first Secretary of the Navy. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1971.
THE SPECS: Known as Halcyon House, the Federal-style building in Georgetown dates to the late 1700s. The roughly 30,000-square-foot house, which has a large garden with a pool in the back, wasn’t publicly listed at the time of the sale, and the deal happened quietly off-market, according to local agents.
A spokesman for Harris said he grew up in D.C. and spends a lot of time there, given his ownership of the Commanders. He said Harris and his wife have plans to restore the building, turning it into a single-family home while preserving its historical significance. He said their primary residence will continue to be in Miami, where property records show they own a home on upscale North Bay Road.
Harris has a taste for high-end real estate—and an appetite for repurposing historic buildings. In 2017, he bought the storied 21,000-square-foot Dommerich Mansion in New York City for $52 million. At the time, the property had most recently been occupied by the Center for Specialty Care, an outpatient facility for plastic surgery. He returned it to its original use as a single-family home.

NY Giants news: ‘Reporting structure’ holding up John Harbaugh signing
Harbaugh is still expected to become the head coach, but getting to the finish line hasn’t been easy.
John Harbaugh has yet to sign a contract to become head coach of the New York Giants nearly 48 hours after reports broke that he had accepted the job. On Friday evening, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said that “reporting structure” and other organizational issues are holding up the deal.
“It does not sound like this is about money,” Rapoport said. “It sounds like it’s more about reporting structure and who is able to do what and how the whole organization is set up.”
Rapoport said it “seems like there was something lost in translation” because these are issues that would generally be ironed out before any word that a job had been accepted.
“There’s a lot to be handled. It sounds like they are trying to handle it, but smooth sailing it has not been,” Rapoport said.
There remains a belief that the Giants will formally introduce Harbaugh as their head coach on Tuesday.

Sources: A.J. Brown asked for a trade numerous times this past Eagles season
The star wide receiver might not be back in Philadelphia in 2026.
A.J. Brown asked for a trade numerous times this past season (as early as after the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3), multiple sources confirmed to Bleeding Green Nation.
Brown may not be that guy any longer. He has been disgruntled all season. He does not have the speed to create separation from a defender anymore, and despite his complaining about getting the ball, he suffered from a spate of drops this season that were highly uncharacteristic of him. A bold case in point came in the Eagles’ 23-19 Wild Card round playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
When asked in November about the possibility of Brown being traded, Roseman said, “I think that when you’re trying to be a great team, it’s hard to trade great players, and A.J. Brown is a great player. He wears a ‘C’ for a reason. He’s an important part of this team, of this organization. He cares about winning, he cares about his teammates, and I think when you’re a team like ours that is looking forward to an opportunity to compete for a championship, you just don’t get rid of guys like that.”
Of course, Roseman said that.
He also said that about Carson Wentz in January 2021.
“When you have players like that, they’re like fingers on your hands,” Roseman said. “You can’t even imagine that they’re not a part of you, that they’re not here. That’s how we feel about Carson.”
Roseman traded Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts on March 17, 2021.

After Black Monday: What happened to preseason “hot seat” coaches?
This coaching cycle has been interesting.
In July last year, Sportsbetting.ag published the odds on which NFL head coach would be fired first in 2025. That dubious distinction ended up going to Brian Callahan in Tennessee who took the honors in 2025.
At the time the odds were published, Brian Daboll of the Giants was listed as the most likely head coach to be fired first, but ended up being second. His firing may end up biting the Giants twice every year as he’s interviewing for the Eagles OC position.
So how did the rest of those preseason odds turn out this year? Here’s an overview of what happened to each head coach since the early odds were released.

The obvious surprise on this list is Pete Carrol, who went to Vegas with high expectations but managed to win only three games.

Jonathan Gannon would be a disastrous defensive coordinator hire for the Cowboys
After four seasons [with the Vikings], Gannon was named the defensive backs coach in Indianapolis under newly-hired coordinator Matt Eberflus.
Yes, that Matt Eberflus.
That was the same Colts staff that featured Nick Sirianni as the offensive coordinator, though head coach Frank Reich called plays on offense. When Sirianni was hired to coach the Eagles, he brought Gannon with him as his defensive coordinator.
One of the first things Gannon did in running his own defense was establish a mantra: HITS. It stood for Hustle, Intensity, Takeaways, and Smart. It encapsulated everything he wanted his defense to be about. If it sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the exact same thing Eberflus preached in Indianapolis, later taking the mantra to Chicago and then to Dallas.
There lies the first big problem with Gannon: he is, in many ways, an Eberflus disciple. He spent more time working with Zimmer, but Gannon has been candid about how much he’s taken from Eberflus. So why would the Cowboys replace Eberflus with him?
To boil it all down to one thing, Gannon wouldn’t represent change. Not only is he a proud disciple of Eberflus, he’s frequently demonstrated the same kind of stubbornness and lack of in-game awareness that got Eberflus in so much trouble. And his questionable conduct also makes it hard to square Gannon as fitting Schottenheimer’s bill of a teacher.
Hiring Gannon would ultimately signify that the Cowboys learned nothing from this past year.
