Bayern Munich loanee Javier Fernández has been so unlucky with injuries in recent years. He impressed enough in the senior team’s 2024 pre-season that head coach Vincent Kompany decided to bring him along for the trip to South Korea as well. Upon his return from the trip, however, he almost immediately got injured. That injury and a nearly immediate second injury upon Fernández’s return saw the teenager miss around 18 months of football between the summer of 2024 and the final months of 2025. Upon finally
returning to full fitness, however, the former Atlético Madrid youth player left on loan to 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Nürnberg in search of regular playing time.
Nürnberg head coach Miroslav Klose has been very hesitant to use the team’s #20, however, keeping Fernández on the bench for over 2 months before finally giving him his debut in the starting XI in a 1-1 draw with Arminia Bielefeld. Klose spoke of his relief that Fernández could back up his training performances with performances on the pitch and has subsequently started the 19-year-old in the next two matches.
Overjoyed at this recent development and opening up in a fairly recent interview, Fernández discussed what it was like finally getting a chance: “I’ve often thought about how it will feel to make such a starting lineup debut for the club,” he said, as captured by @iMiaSanMia_GER. “Since I came to Nuremberg, this has been my big goal. That’s why I really enjoyed it.”
On the topic of his positive attitude, @iMiaSanMia_GER also captured Fernández demonstrating an admirable attitude: “I’m just happy to be able to be a player for FCN here. I have to show that then. It’s not acted either, but I really like the people and the club.”
BFW Analysis
Of course, it is not right for a Bayern player to like Nürnberg TOO much. It just isn’t right.
Jests aside, the quality he possesses has been clear in his appearances and it is so nice to seem him play regularly again after nearly two years. He may be near the end of the season for Nürnberg but perhaps he will stay another season to continue to get match practice. As long as he gets regular minutes at an appropriate level, Bayern and Fernández can be happy.
