While Barcelona’s main stars are still on vacation following their exploits at the World Cup, the youngsters are hoping to stake a claim for a spot in the first team in the upcoming season.
Several La Masia prospects were involved in the 2-2 draw against Birmingham in Friday’s preseason opener, and a few names caught the eye as they look to impress Hansi Flick and stick around once the big names return.
Hamza Abdelkarim certainly took advantage his first opportunity with a brace on his debut, while
16-year-old Ebrima Tunkara justified the excitement around his debut with a strong showing.
Xavi Espart and Álvaro Cortés were already part of the squad last season but showed they can have even bigger roles, and 17-year-old left-back Jordi Pesquer really impressed in the second half.
La Masia continues to produce great talent but it’s not easy to make the jump from the academy to the first team, but a few of the youngsters in this preseason have shown enough to warrant a bigger look from the coaching staff in the next few weeks.
