Jaylon Thompson writes how the Royals finally got to Joe Ryan in a blowout win Saturday.
“He’s just had a lot of success against us,” Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino said of Ryan. “So any time you can put runs on a guy like that is huge. To be able to get five in the first there and get him out after two (innings), you can’t ask much more than that.”
The Royals were determined offensively. All nine hitters came to the plate — and some were methodical against Ryan — in the first inning. The Royals demonstrated
patience and diligently worked favorable counts before landing the knockout blow.
Carter Jensen recorded his first career MLB hit.
It was a personal milestone. And perhaps, not even the biggest accomplishment of the night as he also recorded his first career hit.
“It was awesome, especially catching Avila,” Jensen said. “I’ve caught him since 2022. So super comfortable out there, especially with him coming in. And then I’ve been getting to know all the other relievers, all the other starters, how they like to pitch and stuff like that. So when Sam came in for the ninth, I was super comfortable there.”
An MRI on Bobby Witt Jr. showed nothing but back spasms.
According to a team trainer, Witt felt his back tighten up during the top of the sixth inning on Friday when he fielded two groundouts, one that caused him to range and backhand a ball. His back continued to tighten when the Royals got back in the dugout for the bottom of the frame, and Witt was unable to go back out on the field for the seventh inning.
The spasms didn’t subside throughout Friday night and Saturday, prompting the further testing.
Jason Foster at MLB.com writes about Cole Ragans’ rehab start for Omaha on Sunday.
Royals lefty Cole Ragans looked strong Sunday in his first rehab start since straining his left rotator cuff in June.
Ragans tossed three innings for Triple-A Omaha in a game at Iowa, allowing a solo homer and an infield single while striking out seven batters — including six straight at one point. Of his 45 pitches, 34 were strikes, and his fastball touched 97 mph to multiple hitters.
