Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Cam Devanney, who came over to the club from the Kansas City Royals in the Adam Frazier deal, has made the decision to leave the Bucs, signing a deal with the Hanshin Tigers
in Japan.
Devanney heads to Nippon Professional Baseball after looking pretty underwhelming this past season for the Bucs. In 14 Major League games, he hit just .139 and had a plethora of strikeouts. This came after hitting just .256 in Triple-A Indianapolis. When he initially came over in the Frazier deal, he was hitting .272 with 18 homers in Triple-A Omaha, but obviously was not able to replicate that performance anywhere in the Pirates system.
This was another trade fail in the Ben Cherington era, as it’s becoming increasingly obvious the Pirates GM gets fleeced in trades. Sure, this was for Adam Frazier, who was never going to command a huge package in return, but to see the main piece in that deal now completely out of MLB less than a year after the tarde definitely hurts.
As mentioned in the above tweet, the Bucs are now down to 38 men on the 40-man roster, leaving space for some moves to improve the roster. Whether the GM has the chops and the finanacial freedom to do it is another matter entirely, but the Bucs are going to need to make some moves to fill the spots.
