For anyone not yet over the sting of Bayern Munich’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, here is a little salt for your wounds.
Per L’Equipe (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), PSG is dumbfounded at why Bayern Munich was complaining so much about the referee and went as far as to say that the Bavarians engaged in some dark arts to have Eduardo Camavinga booted in the quarterfinals vs. Real Madrid:
High ranked sources at PSG do not understand Bayern’s complaints about the refereeing
– within the Parisian club it is said that “Against Real Madrid, they [Bayern] managed to get Camavinga sent off by putting insane pressure on the referee. This time, they didn’t succeed.”
In addition, PSG believes that the second leg of the tie could have been a blow out, if not for a stellar performance from Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer:
Some at PSG also believe that without Manuel Neuer’s saves, the second leg could have turned into a thrashing.
BFW Commentary
Were there questionable calls by the referee? 100%.
Did some at Bayern Munich (maybe) carry on too much about the referee’s impact? Maybe, but the stakes for this tie were massive.
While Bayern Munich was outplayed, the referee was also overmatched and not ready for a game of that magnitude. The concerns over consistency seen in the referee performances were legitimate and deserved to be called out.
However, PSG was also better than Bayern Munich on that day. Both things can be true, but the reigning champs, who are heading back to another UCL finale, can have these kinds of stories drop after that fact.
That crown affords PSG that kind of luxury, while Bayern Munich can regroup and think of how to improve for next season.
