From forgotten man to key squad player: Serge Gnabry is enjoying a season of rejuvenation in Munich.
The Bayern Munich forward added another brace to his tally in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Union Berlin and now has eight goals and six assists on the year in the league…part of what is sure to be a record-shattering campaign by the German Rekordmeister.
For Gnabry, his recent success is part load management and part team chemistry. Year 2 of Vincent Kompany has put the whole squad in a flow state, and he is only
one of the beneficiaries.
“I didn’t start in the last two matches, so I probably had a lot of energy,” Gnabry explained in post-match comments captured by FCBayern.com. “I wanted to turn in a good display and prove myself again. Fortunately, I was able to do that today.
“The longer we play together, the better we know one another. Under our coach, who’s been here for one and a half years now, the principles have become clearer and clearer. Everybody knows exactly what’s expected of them in their position. That’s why it works so well, no matter the rotation. You don’t really think about records during matches. Of course we’ll be happy when we break it, and we’ll see how far we can take it. It’s really incredible we’re on 97 goals, I wouldn’t have expected that. It just shows how good our attack is.”
Bayern scored 99 in all of last season in the Bundesliga and still have seven matches to go in this one. It’s a matter of when, not if, and by how much the existing record (101) will be surpassed.
