The next episode of Raw is a milestone edition; the Jan. 5 show marks one-year since WWE’s flagship moved from a traditional television network to streaming giant Netflix.
For their part, WWE booked the show
in one of their top regular venues — Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, and has a trio of big title matches booked for the card. Netflix’s contribution to the party is a tie-in in to their biggest hit/cultural phenomenon — Stranger Things.
We don’t know much about what Monday’s Raw/Stranger Things crossover will entail. But in case CM Punk vs. Bron Breakker and buzz from the New Year’s Eve release of the series finale (which in addition to helping all five seasons of the show dominate Netflix’s views reports for the past month, made $25 million at the box office on Wednesday night when the last episode was simulcast at movie theaters) isn’t enough of a draw?
WWE is hoping that seeing or being part of a building full of Stranger Things cosplayers and superfans will convince fans of wrestling and/or the Duffer Bros’ retro horror/fantasy/sci-fi coming-of-age story to check out the Jan. 5 Raw. They put out the call for attendees to don their “best Stranger Things inspired ‘fits” before heading to Monday’s show in New York City:
Me? I’m an old nerd. I probably have a trucker hat and t-shirt in my closet that would make a passable Dustin. If you’re on a budget (and after buying Raw tickets, you probably are), you can probably make yourself a “Scoops Ahoy” vest on the cheap. Personally, I hope this guy brings his “dancin’ Vecna” to Barclays Monday night…
