The Los Angeles Chargers are enjoying some downtime with training camp on the horizon, but some players should be looking to get in the best shape of their career.
Several members of the Chargers’ roster will be fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster or in the starting lineup. ESPN insider Chris Rim explains how the left guard position is wide open.
“The Chargers’ interior offensive line has been a weakness for this team since coach Jim Harbaugh and general manger [sic] Joe Hortiz took the job two
seasons ago. This offseason, they replaced the entire group, but still have questions at left guard,“ Rhim wrote.
“The battle, according to Harbaugh, is between Kayode Awosika, rookie Jake Slaughter, Trevor Penning and Trey Pipkins III. Realistically, because of Slaughter’s selection in the second round, this job should be his to lose, but he’ll have to earn that right in training camp.“
Slaughter might be the favorite going into camp, but Trevor Penning is a former first-round pick and could have an impact on the competition. Penning spent his first three full seasons with the New Orleans Saints before being traded in the middle of the 2025 campaign for a future sixth-round pick. Penning signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the Chargers this offseason in hopes of competing for the starting left guard spot.
The goal is to have the iron sharpen the iron in training camp. Hopefully, that will lead to some elevated play from the four candidates, allowing the best player to emerge.
