Wow, does winning feel good. The Chicago White Sox had strong, all-around game today to steal the game from the Detroit Tigers, 6-4, along with the series. The Sox end their straight 17-game stretch with a win at Comerica Park, and the plane ride back home will definitely have all the vibes. The team is now 7-1 in their last eight games on this road trip.
Charlie Morton started the game on the mound for the Tigers, who was met with a leadoff single by Mike Tauchman and walk to Lenyn Sosa. This left
two runners on with two outs for Andrew Benintendi, who took advantage with a two-run double.
Davis Martin also got into some early trouble, as the Tigers tied it right back up in the bottom half of the inning. Gleyber Torres walked, Kerry Carpenter hit a ground-rule double, and a Riley Greene walk loaded the bases with no outs. Looking at the box score was interesting for this play, as a wacky play by Brooks Baldwin in center field allowed two runs to score. Baldwin secured the out on the sacrifice fly by Spencer Torkelson, but a throwing error went out of play, allowing two runs to score.
Wenceel Pérez had another sacrifice fly to give Detroit the lead before the inning ended, although Lenyn Sosa slammed a solo shot to center to start the top of the third and tie it back up. This was his 20th of the season, leading the team.
Tyler Holton replaced Morton to start the top of the fourth while Martin continued on the mound for the White Sox and gave up … you guessed it, another sacrifice fly for a run!
With the Tigers now up, 4-3. Will Robertson had THE catch of the day in MLB. Not only was it the catch of the day, but quite possibly the catch of the year for the South Siders. Take a look at how he levitated over the fence to take away this home run:
Put it on all the highlight reels.
Meanwhile, Martin was immediately replaced following the out by Brandon Eisert. Martin went a solid 5 1/3 IP with two hits, four runs, three walks, and three strikeouts. Interesting stat line to say the least, but due to two of his runs unearned, his ERA moves down to 4.03.
In the top of the seventh the South Siders found some fight in them, as they tied it up with two outs. Colson Montgomery and Benintendi had back-to-back, one-out walks, and Robertson delivered at the plate with a two-out single.
Sosa delivered in the top of the eighth with his solo shot, as the White Sox took the two-run lead. Chase Meidroth and Tauchman had back-to-back singles to start it off, and Kyle Teel took a walk to make it bases loaded, no outs. Sosa delivered with a clutch single down the middle, which drove in what held up as the game-winning runs, 6-4.
From there, Jordan Leasure and Mike Vasil closed it out in Comerica, and you can drive home safely.
It feels good to win, and it feels good to watch good baseball. Not only is the team playing some of their best baseball of the season, but have actually been one of the better teams in the MLB in September. They grab their 55th win, as they look to inch closer to avoiding 100 losses on the year. After a LONG stretch, the team will have a day to rest tomorrow before they start a quick home stand against the Tampa Bay Rays starting on Tuesday night.
That makes way for DA BEARS to play tomorrow night, so let’s hope they can continue the good vibes in Chicago, and we will see you back here on Tuesday!
