Matt Eddy of Baseball America, in a run-down of minor league signings, reports that the Atlanta Braves have re-signed starting pitchers Carlos Carrasco and Darius Vines to minor league deals. He also notes
that pitcher Luis Vargas has inked a minor league deal as well.
Carrasco, 38, is a long-time big league veteran who started three games with Atlanta last summer when the team was at the apex of injury issues with the starting rotation. He was designated for assignment but re-signed with the organization and finished the year with Gwinnett.
Vines, 27, didn’t pitch last season due to injury, but has been in the organization since being drafted in 2016 and has nine major league games under his belt, appearing with Atlanta in both 2023 and 2024.
Vargas, 23, has been in the Braves organization since 2019 but hasn’t pitched above the AA level. He finished last season on the injured list.
Carrasco has struggled in three of his last four seasons at the big-league level, but bring almost 300 games of starting experience and is well-respected within the game. He’ll likely return to Triple-A to help mentor the team’s starting pitching prospects.
Vines was a fringe prospect whose strike-out numbers slipped significantly prior to his injury. He’ll likely give the team an option in the bullpen or rotation in the upper minors as he tried to work his way back to the big leagues.
