After a pair of home SEC contests it’s time for the Georgia Bulldogs to journey to the Least Lovely Little Village on the Plains. You’ve got Auburn jokes to tell your friends and colleagues, and if you’re actually going to the game you probably need to update your shots and make sure your passport is in order (trust me, it’s like a whole different country). Point is, you’ve got things to do. So let’s get you caught up on what’s going on in Bulldog Nation.
The Bulldogs opened as a 4.5 point favorite
versus the Tigers, a reasonable number given Jordan-Hare’s reputation as a tough place to play (though not always) and the signs of life shown by the Plainsmen under the leadership of former Oklahoma QB Jackson Arnold. Auburn may be 3-2, but those losses came on the road to good Oklahoma and Texas A&M squads by a single score.
Kickoff will also be at night, with the Tigers planning to retire the jersey of noted laptop thief Cam Newton, so I’d expect a pretty charged atmosphere. This is the space where I would normally mention pejoratively that Cam Newton spent a grand total of one semester enrolled at Auburn. But then that puts him right about average among Auburn scholars, and unlike the average Auburn graduate after leaving he found a job, so I guess I get it.
AL.com has a quick introduction to the key matchups in this one from an Auburn perspective. I agree that one place Georgia may have a solid edge is in the kicking game. Of note, Auburn is near the bottom of the SEC in kickoffs leading to touchbacks, with one-third of the Tigers’ kickoffs being returnable this season. That sounds like an opportunity for the likes of Zachariah Branch if you ask me.
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
