Between Day 1 of Cleveland Browns training camp and Week 1 of the regular season ends up being just under two months of time. There is a lot of space for things to change on the Browns roster, including the QB competition. As we’ve seen with other teams, injuries are a big part of what changes things around the NFL. Cleveland also has a roster full of young players, so the swings in performance can be great.
The competition between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders got off to an interesting start
on Day 1 of training camp. On Day 2, Browns GM Andrew Berry spoke to the media and was asked about the starting quarterback job and the variables, including the age of the two combatants, that would impact the decision.
Berry made it very clear that the only thing he and Todd Monken care about in the battle is “production,” as he minimized age as a meaningful reason to make the big decision:
Based on Berry’s statement, Watson’s huge contract will not impact their decision. Sanders’ lack of experience and upside will not impact their decision. Watson heading to free agency at the end of the year will not impact their decision. Previous performance will not impact their decision.
If Berry is to be trusted at his word, which is similar to what Monken has said, the starting quarterback will be the one they believe will be the most productive on the field in Week 1 of the 2026 season.
