Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez and Emanuel Navarrete now have a date set for their super featherweight world title unification bout.
The IBF and WBO titleholders will meet on March 7 in Phoenix, according to Ring Magazine, with the fight streaming on DAZN and promoted by Matchroom Boxing.
The bout has been expected since September, when Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KO) joined Nunez (29-1, 27 KO) in the ring following the latter’s successful title defense against Christopher Diaz in Los Mochis, Mexico. The reported
working date was January 24, but early March gives both plenty of time to fully enjoy the holiday season, and keeps it away from what is looking like a possibly heavily-stacked late January boxing calendar.
You hate to put these expectations on any matchup, but this really does have Fight of the Year ingredients on paper, and it’s an easy bout to get excited about for any boxing fan.
Navarrete’s mandatory challenger, Charly Suarez, has reportedly been made a “step-aside” deal by Top Rank, who promote Navarrete, in order for this unification to go forward. Suarez would in all likelihood await the winner by order of the WBO.
