How the heck long have I been doing this anyway? It doesn’t matter; the mad-kitchen scientist is back for another season of recipes to make your Buffalo Bills game days even more memorable.
For those of you new to this, it’s pretty simple. We love the Bills. We love food. Every week, you’ll get a themed recipe based on the Bills and their opponent.
This week you’re getting a fun one, but you’re going to want to plan ahead for Monday. Sharing this early on Sunday will hopefully allow you to budget time
in the day to stop at your favorite liquor store that hopefully sells corn whiskey (I can recommend Mellow Corn), or you could substitute with your preferred bourbon.
Gam Gam’s Secret
Recently I made a reference to the movie Beerfest, which is an all-time great. Then the Rams game was coming up, and there’s a SPECTACULAR reference to rams (the animal), which led me to the idea to make a drink for this week’s game.
We’re calling it “Gam Gam’s Secret” but if you know the movie, you know the real name of this cocktail.
Based off of the Brown Derby drink with a little agricultural and spicy twist to it, Gam Gam’s Secret will help you for any international beer drinking competition. Because if you can drink this, **** you can drink almost anything.
This recipe is for Rumblers who are 21 and over. Please drink responsibly.
Gam Gam’s Secret
Makes: About 8 drinks
Active time: 10 min
Total time: 3 hours
Ingredients
1 serrano pepper, seeded, chopped
1 shot (1.5 oz) + 16 oz corn whiskey, divided (see directions)
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup honey
8 oz grapefruit juice (1 oz per drink)
Essentials: Measuring cups; shaker, ice, and garnish (if you like); it’s a drink, I think you can handle it
- Soak chopped serrano in measuring cup filled with one shot of corn whiskey 2-3 hours.
- Make honey syrup: Add 1/2 cup warm water and 1/2 cup honey to separate measuring cup; stir until honey is thoroughly mixed in.
- Combine 2 oz corn whiskey, 1 oz grapefruit juice, and 1 oz prepared honey syrup into shaker with ice.
- Shake until chilled, 10-15 seconds; pour into serving glass.
- Garnish as desired, and enjoy responsibly.
The recipe should yield about 1 cup of prepared honey syrup, which is enough for eight drinks.
Wingin’ It tips
I don’t have many tips on this one. I’m a big fan of chilling everything and skipping the shaker, but I know that can be controversial with bartending. Feel free to also play around with the ratio of things, if you want it sweeter go ahead and increase the syrup amount.
Also, I should note that corn whiskey might not be easy to find. I had recently tried some at a Polish festival and was impressed. I also figured the clear color would help steer this away from a brown liquid. Alas, without a ton of driving, I wasn’t getting my hands on the clear stuff, but my sister picked up a bottle of Mellow Corn, which was perfect for the flavor profile I wanted — and it’s yellow, which also works if you know the Beerfest reference.
I originally wasn’t sure if I’d get my hands on corn whiskey, so I tried it with bourbon as well (which is what’s in a Brown Derby). I will say that I preferred the corn whiskey in this, and it’s more “Western New York-y”. That said, the bourbon was also quite good.
If you’re curious on the heat level, the serrano added warmth but not overpowering spice. I felt it was just enough to add character to the drink.
