It’s hate week across the state of Iowa as the Hawkeyes head to Ames to take on the Cyclones and with it comes a pair of fanbases just itching for bragging rights for the next year.
A season ago, it was the Cyclones who emerged victorious on the foot of Kyle Konrardy, who drilled a 54-yarder to put a dagger through the heart of the Hawkeye faithful. But leading up to that moment, it was a dominating day on the ground for Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson, who finished with 187 rushing yards and a pair
of touchdowns, while both quarterback made mistakes.
Cade McNamara had a Cade McNamara day, finishing just 13 of 29 passing for only 99 yards with no TDs and a pair of interceptions. On the other side of things, Iowa State’s Rocco Becht had a much better day throwing for 272 yards and a pair of TDs on 23 of 35 passing. But 75 of those yards came on a long TD to Jaylin Noel and Becht also threw a pick while the Cyclones really struggled to get anything going on the ground.
Looking ahead to Saturday, our old friend Rob Donaldson did a deep dive breaking down the film from Iowa’s season opener, as well as Iowa State’s first two games of the season to give Hawkeye fans some insight into what to expect out of this year’s QB battle.
The Hawkeyes and Cyclones are poised to square off at 11am CT on Saturday, September 6th inside Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. The Cyclones opened at 2.5-points favorites according to FanDuel Sportsbook, but have climbed to 3.5-point favorites as of mid-week. The game will be televised nationally on FOX and is set to host the network’s Big Noon Kickoff in the hours leading up to game time.
