Following yesterday’s sudden, though not completely unexpected, departure (dismissal) of Arne Slot, we’ve been getting reactions and behind-the-scenes reporting from club conected reporters in dribs and drabs. However, we hadn’t heard from any of the current players, at least not until team captain Virgil van Dijk released a post on the site formerly known as Twitter.
“We’ll never forget winning the Premier League in our first season together. Thank you, Trainer, and best of luck to you and your family
in the future,” Van Dijk said.
It’s a nice message from the skipper, though also the bare minimum.
Although we probably won’t get Virgil’s full feelings any time soon, if ever, it seems fair to say that he—along with a great number of current and recently departed players—were not entirely satisfied with the Dutch manager, particulary during this entirely mediocre season which saw the reigning English lose 20 matches in all competitions.
Indeed, both Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah openly questioned the falling standards on and off the pitch at the club, pointing a finger squarely in Slot’s direction.
That said, Virg had to acknowledge the league winning campaign. Which he did. As a bare minimum. My captain.
