Bayern Munich travels to face Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the final game of Matchday 4 of the Frauen-Bundesliga season. A win would restore the Bavarians to the top of the standings — if they can also catch up to VfL Wolfsburg, also perfect so far, in goal differential (+10 vs. +8 as it stands).
Sarah Zadrazil has returned just in time as fellow midfielder Lena Oberdorf has suffered a setback in her recovery from a series of knee ligament tears. We could also see fullback Franziska Kett return to the field today,
but center-back Magdalena Eriksson is another major absence.
“Leverkusen have started the season very well, only losing against Wolfsburg,” Bayern coach José Barcala noted in his match preview comments (via FCBayern.com). “They’re capable of pressing high over a long period. That makes it difficult for every opponent because Leverkusen just don’t get tired.
“On the other hand, that does also open up opportunities if we play with composure, get our timings right and show our good passing and positional game. We’ll certainly have a few tactical challenges against Leverkusen but we’ll be well prepared.”
Prediction: Bayern wins, 3-1. Leverkusen can be a potent matchup but Klara Bühl, Momoko Tanikawa and co. will muster up just enough firepower to get through. A late goal levels up the goal difference to Wolfsburg for good measure.
