Teddy Lechner is a young right-shot defenseman that the Avalanche just selected in the 2026 NHL Draft with the 152nd overall pick. As Adrian touched on in yesterday’s T25U25 article on Axel Eloffson, the Avs did not have a lot of high-end draft capital this year, which was anything but a secret going into the draft. That being said, that did not stop the Avs from finding a defenseman late in the draft that profiles similarly to the types of defenseman that they like to draft.

Lechner spent the majority of his 2025-26 season with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL and the Academy of Holy Angels of the USHS-MN system. The Lumberjacks are expected to be Lechner’s team for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Last season, the right handed defenseman recorded two points in 21 games played for the Lumberjacks and 38 points in 23 games for the Holy Angels as well plus a three-game recall to the USNTDP.

While Lechner is still a very young player and subsequently has a lot of time and room to grow as a player, he already profiles as a very skilled skating defenseman, which fits the mold of defenseman that the Avalanche like to have extremely well. Hence, it’s easy to see why they took him in the draft. It’ll be interesting to see how he continues to develop playing full-time in the USHL this upcoming season.

Obviously, with how young he is at 17-years-old, Lechner is still a good way out from even being in the conversation to make the Avalanche at all. But he’s a great prospect for Colorado to have in the pipeline regardless, as he’s a player that fits their mold that they were able to find late in the draft to help replenish their prospect pipeline a little bit.
