Historically, no player has ever recorded as many game-winning drives in their first 40 starts than Bo Nix. He has 14 of them and comparing that to the all-time list no other player even comes close to the 35% game-winning drive rate that Nix has achieved early on in his career.
This start will have a mean snap-back to the mean average, but hopefully by then the Broncos are not
needing game-winning drives every three games to keep winning games.
Despite all of his struggles, Nix has proven has “IT” or whatever “IT” is in the NFL. When the chips are down or his back is against the wall, Nix finds ways to make plays to keep his team alive at the end of games. I’ll take that every damn week, but it sure would be nice for him and the offense to find “IT” in the other 45 minutes of the game.
Broncos daily recap
Riley Moss or Ja’Quan McMillian? Which CB should the Broncos re-sign?
Now, I ask you, Mile High Report. When it comes down to Riley Moss and Ja’Quan McMillian, who do you want the Broncos to re-sign/extend?
Stop blaming Bo
Everyone, just freakin’ relax on the QB play, will you? The second question at yesterday’s presser with Sean Payton was wondering if the head coach had considered replacing Bo Nix.
Potent quotables
Sean Payton
On the offense’s struggle to push the ball vertically and how correctable it is
“We knew going into that [Seattle] game there were some challenging looks based on the way these guys feature their 2-deep, 2-high shell. We’ll be able to get the ball down the field. I was able to listen to what [QB] Bo [Nix] said specifically and certainly you come away from a game like that and you’re wanting a little bit more or obviously a chunk play. That starts with me and us giving him those opportunities when they present itself.”
On if he has considered making a change at quarterback and how QB Bo Nix needs to improve
“To answer your question, no. He’s going to become the byproduct of all the finer things that get improved. The improved play from our offensive line, the more efficient we are relative to balance, running the football. That’s our jobs as coaches here. We talked after the game about we’re excited to get that win, and yet at the same time find that improvement we need in all areas. So, it starts with all of us.”
On how the training staff supports players coming back from injuries mentally and if QB Bo Nix is facing a mental hurdle
“The first question, yes, we have a good training room. There’s a science behind it. There’s a physical, are you healthy or not? All the other things relative to the mental toughness, the mental fortitude. This is a tough league. We hit every aspect, and I think that’s one of the things that attracted us to [QB] Bo [Nix] in the beginning is we had seen his ability to climb through adversity. It’s not just Bo that feels that. Right now, offensively, I feel that, our players feel that and we’ll improve.”
On managing adversity in real time
“I think it’s a little bit of our league. In other words, it gets back to those challenging weeks that I talk about in the offseason. Fortunately, we’re sitting here at 4-2. We’ve got a chance to play better this upcoming weekend, and we will. I think that part of that is when you’re not getting first downs, and I think the body language is important and I think that this is another week where our attention to detail—all those things, it has to improve. We understand that, so we’re anxious to get back to work.”
On OLB Jonathon Cooper coming off the Commissioner’s Exempt List and the work he has done individually
“He initiated the steps right away himself. I won’t go into detail all the things that he felt were important. I think the league was on the same page, the club. A lot of it becomes a league issue at that point. To his credit, he didn’t back away at all from what he felt like was necessary.”
On if he listens to media conversations about QB Bo Nix’s performance
“I try to focus on the next day here. We’re trying to focus on getting ready to play Arizona. That’s kind of where our attention is.”
