The Kentucky Football offense started slow against Vanderbilt. The Wildcats managed only six plays in the first quarter, and quarterback Kenny Minchey started 0/3.
He did not let the early struggles linger too long.
Minchey found his stride and hit nine of his next ten passes as the Cats scored 21 straight points after falling behind 10-0. He ultimately finished the game completing 19/26 attempts for 203 yards and a touchdown. He added a rushing touchdown and 23 rushing yards on the night.
His production
came despite pretty consistent pressure from a desperate Commodore defense. The Dores were 3-4 and winless in the SEC, but Clark Lea had not lost as a head coach in Lexington. They needed a big win here, and they played like it.
Vanderbilt delivered several huge shots, including a roughing the passer penalty, but the Kentucky quarterback stood tall in the pocket and delivered the ball to his receivers. He knew the hits were coming, but he stood tall and put the ball where it needed to be.
His numbers would be even better if the refs had called two pretty obvious defensive pass interference penalties.
But as it has been all season long, the most impressive thing is his continued ball security. Minchey extended his streak of not throwing an interception to 200 even. He has not thrown to the other team since Alabama in Week 2.
That almost ended in the 4th, when he tried to find Kenny Darby on a post, but the Vandy defender just couldn’t hang on as he laid out to intercept it.
Minchey’s TD-INT ratio is up to 12-1 on the year.
That type of quarterback play wins a lot of football games in the SEC. For Kentucky, that means five SEC wins and a guaranteed winning record in the SEC for the first time since 2018 (2021 was vacated).
Kentucky now enters a much-needed bye week to get healthy. It also gives Minchey extra time to develop. Remember, this is only his first full season as a starter. He hasn’t operated that way; he has been in college since 2023, but playing every week is a different ballgame.
After the game, Will Stein said: “He played his best game for us today; he really did.” I believe the coach is right.
