Former two-time heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has survived a bad car accident in Nigeria on Monday morning that killed two people.
Joshua, whose parents are Nigerian, was in the country following
his 6th round KO win over Jake Paul that earned him around $90 million dollars (before taxes). According to reports from Nigerian news sources, Joshua’s car hit a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibidan expressway in Makun, Ogun State around 11 a.m. local time.
Joshua was not driving the vehicle, and photos of the former champ sitting in the back seat covered in glass have already started circulating on social media.
Rescue worker Adeniyi Orojo spoke to Punch Newspaper about the incident.
“It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash.”
“Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. A few minutes after the crash, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. The passenger beside the driver and the person beside Joshua died on the spot.”
Disturbing photos of the two men who died in Joshua’s car are also circulating that show them lying on the side of the road with car panels covering their faces.
Photos of the truck involved in the accident show a massive vehicle wrapped in canvas attached by ropes. It’s unclear whether the vehicle was ‘stationary’ as in ‘not moving at the time of the accident’ or ‘stationary’ as in one of the many broken down vehicles left abandoned on Nigerian highways. It certainly doesn’t look like a functional vehicle in the shared images.
While Anthony Joshua’s injuries are said to be minor, it is too early to confirm anything, especially given the seriousness of the accident that killed two other people in his car. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Joshua and his team following this horrible accident.
