After such a disastrous start to the season — and the presumed disaster that will likely follow over the next 13 weeks — it’s safe to say the Chargers could have numerous positions of need come next year’s draft.
At this rate, the Bolts could be in line for a top three pick in next year’s draft. They could very well be in range of drafting Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith, but everything seems to point to him going No. 1 overall and chances are the Chargers will not be there at the top unless this year us
truly one of the worst in franchise history.
Another name fans should get to know is Notre Dame cornerback Leonard Moore. He’s this year’s top cornerback prospect and arguably one of the best at the position to come out in recent years. He’s a complete, scheme-independent player who also reinforced his tackling entering the 2026 season.
If a team does not need a quarterback in the top five, this is most certainly someone that will go that early.
In a new 2027 mock draft from Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski, the Bolts end up picking Moore with the second-overall pick following the Titans drafting Jeremiah Smith ahead of them.
Here’s Sobleski on how Moore fits with the Chargers:
“The Los Angeles Chargers are in the midst of a disastrous season after starting 0-5. The team could go in a myriad of directions. In this instance, the Chargers add the best cornerback prospect since Patrick Peterson. Leonard Moore can immediately replace Donte Jackson, who is a free agent next year.”
Other prospects that Sobleski believes could be on the table for the Chargers this year are LSU left tackle Jordan Seaton and Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons.
Seaton is a bit odd as Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt still exist, but this could make sense if the Chargers really do not believe Slater and his injury issues will vanish anytime soon. I don’t think they’re getting out of his contract soon, either.
Simmons is a real possibility given the talks of Khalil Mack either being traded before the deadline this season or simply retiring after the season altogether. The Chargers would be left with a duo of Tuli Tuipulotu and Akheem Mesidor, but their defense has always thrived with a trio of impact pass rushers. Drafting Simmons that high would be right on par with where they want to remain as a defense.
