The DFB-Pokal brought back the excitement of David vs Goliath on the pitch once again. After a roller coaster night, Goliath managed to stay alive by the tiniest of margins. Bayern Munich did not have it easy despite going up against a 3.Liga team in SV Wehen Wiesbaden. It was game where the opposition showed great spirit and never backed down.
Creating their own luck
The Wehen side knew the creative mismatch against the opposition and sought to throwing numbers to defend against the mighty Bayern. That tactic coupled with
a fantastic offside trap worked to perfection. Despite being dominated in possession, shooting and passing, Wehen outmatched the visitors in defence. The numbers clearly reveal the impact of this simple yet effective strategy. 14 interceptions, 37 clearances and catching the Bayern attackers offside 5 times, Wehen waited patiently for the opportunity to catch Bayern with the long ball and managed to succeed twice.

Florian Strizel was hero for his team as he registered 10 saves on the night including a penalty from the clinical Harry Kane. In the post-match interview(via FC Bayern) he said,“It was a rollercoaster of emotions, I have to say. We had the feeling that not much was working for us going forward, but we kept fighting. Obviously we tried to attack with long balls and that’s also how we scored the two goals. Then we defended almost everything until just before the end, but only almost everything.”
“Disappointment outweighed by pride”
Despite getting even on the scoreboard by the 70th minute, Wehen fell short of keeping Bayern at bay before the final whistle. Harry Kane made up for his penalty miss with a late late header that saw the visitors seal the victory and go into the next round of the cup. It was a brave fight put up by the homeside. Wehen can walked away with a memorable night of football and their heads held high.

The Wehen coach, Nils Döring was disappointed at how close the defeat was and quickly pointed towards some errors. Nonetheless, the manager was proud of his boys. “At the first moment it was a huge disappointment. Now that’s outweighed by the pride. The boys put up a great fight. We were one minute away. I would have been so happy for the boys, unfortunately it didn’t happen in the end. We showed them too much respect in the first half. At 2-1 we suddenly believed. It was an awesome evening,” he said.
Bayern Munich traveled to Frankfurt to take on SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB-Pokal.
The home side was game and did give Bayern Munich a battle. Sure, the Bavarians were deeper, quicker, stronger, and better, but the 3.Liga side was not going to go down easy in what was an entertaining match. Bayern Munich ultimately won 3-2.
