The Green Bay Packers had an extra roster spot open following rookie minicamp, as the team didn’t sign a single tryout player after tight end Eni Falayi dropped off the roster. With that open roster spot, the Packers chose to sign a backup quarterback on Monday in Tyrod Taylor, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Taylor has been in the NFL since 2011, a career that has featured him with the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, New York Giants and New York Jets.
For his career, he’s 29-31-1 from a record perspective and has a passer rating of 87.7.
For perspective, Desmond Ridder, who was previously the favorite to win the QB2 job in Green Bay this year, has an 82.6 pass rating.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Packers keep all of these quarterbacks or if Kyle McCord and/or Kyron Drones will get cut moving forward. Green Bay’s coaches have stated in the past that it’s difficult to rep four quarterbacks in camp, and now the team is up to five: Jordan Love, Taylor, Ridder, McCord and Drones.
So far, there have been no details on the Taylor contract. Generally, veteran backups cost north of $5 million (up to $8 million) per year. Since this move was done post-draft, the addition of Taylor will not count against the Packers in the compensatory pick formula, preserving the 2027 picks they’re expected to earn from losing Romeo Doubs, Malik Willis, Quay Walker and Kingsley Enagbare.
